What is WebP?

WebP is currently the standard for optimized web images, developed by Google. It offers significantly smaller file sizes than traditional JPG and PNG formats while maintaining excellent visual quality. WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression, as well as animation and full alpha channel transparency. It is supported by all modern browsers and has become the go-to format for web performance optimization over the past decade.

Why convert to AVIF?

AV1 Image File Format (AVIF) is the successor to WebP, based on the AV1 video codec developed by the Alliance for Open Media. It offers even better compression than WebP — typically 20-50% smaller files at the same visual quality. This means faster page loads, reduced bandwidth costs, and improved Core Web Vitals scores. AVIF supports HDR, wide color gamut, film grain synthesis, and full transparency, making it the most feature-rich image format available today.

Full Transparency (Alpha Channel) Support

Unlike JPEG, both WebP and AVIF fully support the Alpha Channel, which allows images to have transparent backgrounds. When you convert your images using our tool, the background transparency is perfectly preserved in the final AVIF file. The checkerboard pattern shown in the preview area represents transparent regions — what you see is exactly what you get in the final download.

  • Zero Quality Loss Transparency: Our Canvas API conversion does not add a white background. The alpha channel data is transferred pixel-by-pixel from the WebP source to the AVIF output.
  • Browser-Native Encoding: We use your browser's built-in AVIF encoder via the Canvas API (canvas.toBlob('image/avif')). There are no external libraries or server-side processing involved.
  • Instant Processing: Because everything runs in your browser's memory, conversion typically completes in under a second for most images.
