Encoding Std.

Component vs. URI Encoding

encodeURIComponent() encodes all special characters including /, ?, =, and & — ideal for query parameter values. encodeURI() preserves the URL structure, only encoding unsafe characters like spaces and non-ASCII.

Security First

Why encode locally?

URLs frequently contain sensitive query parameters: session tokens, API keys, user emails, or search queries. Sending these to an online encoder is a privacy risk. File Gulp processes everything inside your browser using JavaScript — zero data exposure.

Common URL encoding reference

Here are the most frequently encoded characters in web development:

  • Space: Encoded as %20 (standard) or + (in application/x-www-form-urlencoded data).
  • Ampersand (&): Becomes %26 — critical because & separates query parameters.
  • Equals (=): Becomes %3D — used to separate key-value pairs in query strings.
  • Slash (/): Becomes %2F — only encoded in Component mode to avoid breaking URL paths.
  • Plus (+): Becomes %2B — important because + is interpreted as a space in form data.
  • Non-ASCII (e.g., Arabic): Characters like مرحبا are converted to UTF-8 byte sequences then percent-encoded.
