What is Base64?
Base64 is an encoding scheme used to represent binary data (like images or files) in an ASCII string format. This ensures data remains intact and isn't corrupted during transport across networks or within JSON payloads.
Base64 is NOT Encryption
A common mistake in development is assuming Base64 secures or hides data. It does not. Base64 is merely encoding and is universally decodable. Never use it to hide passwords or sensitive secrets.
Common uses for Base64 in Web Development
- Data URIs: Encoding small images or SVGs into Base64 allows you to embed them directly inside CSS or HTML, reducing HTTP requests.
- API Authentication: Standard Basic Authentication requires you to send your username and password encoded as a Base64 string in the HTTP Header.
- JSON Payloads: JSON cannot natively store raw binary data. Files must be converted to Base64 strings before being sent via REST APIs.
